6th Annual Bay Street Arts & Music Festival Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: July 19-20, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. 2008
Price: free

MillValley guitarist Michael LaMacchia must be an avid record collector or, at the very least, a voracious listener. He can play a love ballad with all the Phrygian mode harmonies that we'd normally associate with Gypsy flamenco, and sound like, well, someone who plays flamenco. And then he can shift on a dime, to jam-band funk with Tower of Power-style vocals, or breezy, downtown-sounding jazz. Perhaps that engagement with multiple genres is necessary for the survival of any independent jazz musician, these days. But LaMacchia does it with flair. He will coheadline this weekend's Bay Street Arts and Music Festival, alongside the Bay Area's own Ashiko Orchestra, which plays traditional West African music. Also featuring food, children's activities, and dance performances, the event runs Saturday-Sunday, July 19-20, at Bay Street (between Powell St. and Shellmound Ave., Emeryville) 11 a.m.-6 p.m., free.
