5:50 p.m. Weekdays: Best Spot to Watch City Officials Work Out

Club One

After the Oakland Athletic Club shut its doors a few years ago, many fitness enthusiasts had to scramble to find a new downtown workout spot. Club One at City Center may look a little fancy, and it's a bit on the pricey side, but it has filled that niche nicely. It has that same laid-back vibe: People of all shapes and ethnicities, and a very low butt-floss count. As a gym, it has all the usual amenities, with pluses that include squash and racquetball courts, an outdoor pool, and a third-floor walking and jogging track that circles above the second-floor basketball courts like a Guggenheim for the gluteals. There are tons of wide open spaces to do your own thing in, and it's one of the few clubs in the area that doesn't charge extra for yoga and tai chi classes. Best of all, you can go at its busiest time -- after work Monday through Thursday -- and there are enough cardio machines and the like that you rarely if ever have to wait. Club One has paid daycare for infants and younger kids, but if your ten-year-old wants to swim or work out, you'll be better off at the Y.
