They weren't the first metal band to reference sci-fi or fantasy literature, but they are perhaps the most devoted. Now in its twelfth year, Seattle "edu-core" band BlöödHag names songs after authors, writes lyrics about their lives, and pelts its headbanging audience with paperbacks -- all in the name of increasing literacy. Still, the band hasn't diminished its penchant for writing two-minute bursts of acidic riffs, barking vocals, and assaultive drumming. Still supporting 2006's Hell Bent for Letters, BlöödHag stops through the Bay Area for three shows -- ample opportunity to pick up a new title or two. On Friday, May 9, at Eli's Mile High Club (3629 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland), 9:30 p.m., $8; Saturday, May 10, at Dark Carnival Books (3086 Claremont Ave., Berkeley), 4 p.m., free; and that night at Annie's Social Club (917 Folsom St., San Francisco), 9 p.m., $10.
