Writer-director Cristian Mungiu tells the story of a young Romanian woman’s stressful illegal abortion in a deliberate manner -- long takes, fixed camera in certain key scenes, deadpan non-acting, etc. We keep waiting for something awful to happen, but aside from a sinister male abortionist, Mungiu’s point seems to be that in the last days of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s reign, no one in Bucharest gives a damn about anything. And he takes 113 long, drawn-out minutes to send this bit of news. So this is the Romanian New Wave? Starring Anamaria Marinca and Laura Vasiliu (113 min.).
