In recent years Oakland's become the go-to place for heady entrepreneurs, gallery curators, theater directors, industrial craftsmen, nonprofit workers, zine publishers, restaurateurs, and thinkers whose marketing savvy is about commensurate with their artistic ideals. On Friday, May 15, the city will celebrate its most enterprising folk at the Oakland Indie Awards, which honors local businesses with social relevance and a strong commitment to the environment. The event will feature vegan soul-food cookbook author Bryant Terry; Grassroots Travel founder Serena Bartlett; product exhibitions from Float Gallery, Compassionate Cooks, One Brown Girl Clothing and other local businesses; samplings from local restaurants; resources from local nonprofits; gallery exhibitions; and small press publications, including event co-host the East Bay Express. At the Crucible (1260 7th St., Oakland). 5:30-8:30 p.m., $20.
