38th Annual Fungus Fair

When: Dec. 1-2 2007

We know them best through omelets, pasta sauce, and hallucinogenic experiences. But there's much, much more to mushrooms, which serve humans in myriad ways and have accumulated more mythology than most other plants. At the Oakland Museum of California (1000 Oak St., Oakland) on Dec. 1, the all-day 38th Annual Fungus Fair features speakers from the Mycological Society of San Francisco. They'll display hundreds of fresh local specimens, show slides, and offer tips on identifying, preparing, and eating safe species. A "mushroom marketplace" includes hot mushroom soup and other treats. Fair continues through Sunday. 10 a.m.
