Inspired by the exciting real-life story of MIT math whizzes and card counters who decided to outsmart Vegas, 21 is, by contrast, an uninspired, by-the-book “thriller” that’s so predictable not even the actors seem surprised by what happens. One imagines the filmmakers, including director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde), simply cut and paste non-fiction source material from Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions into a Screenwriting 101 computer program and ran with the result: a stolid morality play about a good guy who goes bad before remembering he’s a good guy. There’s a seductive hot chick to spice things up, but the only winners here are the house –- meaning Columbia Pictures (123 min.).
