Roland Emmerich’s pièce de résistance is a CGI orgy of crunching terrain, collapsing landmarks, volcanoes, tidal waves, mega-fireballs, and screaming people — with John Cusack as a writer who leads his little flock to the Himalayas while the world crashes down around them. The effects are bracing for fifteen minutes or so (out of the two-and-a-half-hour running time), and they keep coming, but the story boils down to the usual Emmerich chase: pieces of The Day After Tomorrow here, a little Poseidon Adventure there, good guys, bad guys. Backing up divorced dad Cusack are Amanda Peet as his ex, Woody Harrelson as an environmental nut, Danny Glover as President of the US, Thandie Newton as the First Daughter, Chiwetel Ejiofor as a scientist, Oliver Platt as government plutocrat, and Zlatko Buric as a fat Russian gazillionaire trying to buy his way out of the apocalypse. Not a total disaster, just a slight headache. Written by Emmerich and Harald Kloser (158 min.).
