.2010: Get Ready to Start Walking

Welcome to another winter solstice, boys and girls! You’ve made it through one of the toughest years on record, and most of you are still alive. So while we pour out a little for the dead homeys, let’s brace ourselves for a little more bad news. The Chron‘s Michael Capanatuan starts the day with a roundup of all the cuts coming to a mass transit system near you. He starts with Muni, but it’s AC Transit we’re worried about, of course. And the big news is that even though AC Transit had a spooky $57 million budget deficit, the system’s managers won’t have to cut nearly as much as they thought. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission let the AC Transit board take $35 million in fed funds earmarked for the controversial bus rapid transit line and use it for plain old operating expenses. That left the board free to reduce service by only 8.6 percent, instead of the planned 15 percent. So yeah, the tough times are still breathing cold air down our neck, but things could be marginally worse. And that’s as dramatic a rallying cry as we’ve ever heard.
