15th Annual Love Fest: Alternative Valentine's Day

When: Sun., Feb. 14, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $12-$14

If you haven't succumbed to Vagina Monologues fatigue by time the week is up, there's always the annual Love Fest at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), hosted by local slam poet Aya de León. After marrying herself in 1996, the Harvard grad began dedicating a large swath of her work to the concept of self-love and spirituality. But León's version isn't smug or solipsistic. Rather, she promotes a form of self-gratification that brings the rest of the world into its fold. Previous "Love Fests" have deployed the term in a variety of contexts, including "love" as an antidote to war and "love" as a symbol of social equity. (Last year's iteration included a self-marriage ceremony to protest Proposition 8). This year de León celebrates new motherhood, in the company of poet Yosimar Reyes, emcee Amani (formerly of the Attik), and guests from Poetry for the People. It happens Sunday, February 14 at 8 p.m. $12-$14.
