Re: “Food Shift Presents: North Bay Fire Relief Benefit Dinner

Food Shift works collaboratively with communities, businesses and governments to develop long-term sustainable solutions to reduce food waste and build more resilient communities. We believe thousands of people can be employed in the recovery, redistribution and processing of excess food. By reducing food waste, we can feed the hungry, create jobs, combat climate change and cultivate more sustainable communities.

Re: “A New Richmond Neighborhood

The NRMAC does not reflect or fully represent the entire North Richmond community. There is not a single Latino or Asian person on the NRMAC and their participation and membership has been minimal at best. Annexation is long over due and the former gatekeepers can no longer justify their positions other than to help the transition to the New North Richmond. The modicum of power they obtain from having an advisory position is not worth the community's potential for improvement by being part of the Richmond and not just another Contra Costa County step child.

Re: “Despite Canceled Hearing, Oakland Councilmembers Still Plan to Talk About Controversial ICE Raid

So... Hoffer filed an internal affairs complaint (potentially a criminal investigation), and somehow expected that to occur in public? Are ANY criminal investigations conducted in public?

I have an extremely difficult time thinking this official failed to consider this or was so clueless as to expect it.

What this LOOKS like is transparency theater (appearing to be transparent while preforming actions that will in fact obscure what's going on)... With EBX and DBG as either dupes or complicit in the cover up by encouraging the activities that trigger confidential handling.

Innocent until proven guilty... Not in the court of EBX.

Re: “Chinatown's New Tiki Bar The Kon-Tiki Nears Grand Opening

Somewhere there's sanity -- in that vast middle ground between ubiquitous tent cities and $13 cocktails. Meanwhile, give us back our parking spaces. Those gnat racks that have replaced them are a solution in search of a problem.

Somewhere there's still sanity - in that vast middle area between homeless encampments and $13 cocktails. As for those gnat racks? Give us back our parking spaces!

Frank Snapp, I assume you're being sarcastic. In response: No one's looking to take the shirt off your back. What we want as a public asset is that pile of shirts you were planning to rent to those with nothing to wear.

Re: “The Laney College Opposition

"Selling Laney College and its surrounding property off to build a stadium"

Okay, seriously now, where the F*CK do you people keep getting "Sell Laney to build a ballpark"?

THEY AREN'T TALKING ABOUT LANEY.

They want to move the Peralta Admin Center (and they will buy PCCD the new location), they'll cleanup the toxic plumes underneath that Peralta is so far behind on dealing with or even *monitoring* that penalties in the millions will rack up soon, and build a ballpark *not even on the same side of the estuary* as Laney.

"He is also interested in developing the area in order to increase rents and drive out low income communities of color."

Where is your backup for this allegation?

Don't bother answering, YOU DON"T HAVE ONE.

Oakland should roll out the red carpet for ICE and the DEA. Enough is enough!

Re: “West Oakland Finally Gets a Black Panther Mural

"It's the first Black Panther Party mural in Oakland to be painted by Black people."

Who painted the now-razed pink shed on Mandela with illustrations of Olympic medal winners Tommy Smith and John Carlos, which read "It only takes a pair of gloves," and later, "Born with insight, raised with a fist"?

"Mayor Libby Schaaf has come out in support of Kirkpatrick, saying she's "met with Chief Kirkpatrick and has "not seen anything that calls into question the chiefs truthfulness or integrity."

Schaaf is the perfect person to rely upon regarding problems of "truthfulness or integrity."

Re: “Chinatown's New Tiki Bar The Kon-Tiki Nears Grand Opening

Like, I can't even fathom the small minded stupidity of the phrase, "$13 cocktails are the beginning of the end"

Is that a joke? Have you ever left the Bay area? You can still get a $5 jack and coke at Heart & Dagger my dude, don't worry.

Toss some of those gentrifying ass bike share bikes into the lake on your walk over there too like a proud Oaklander.

Re: “Chinatown's New Tiki Bar The Kon-Tiki Nears Grand Opening

You fuckin townies are the dirt worst. $13 cocktails are killing Oakland, high rise housing is killing Oakland, techies are killing Oakland ect...ect...

Grow up, this town sucks and only new nightlife, new housing, new business will improve it. Or maybe if you're lucky the "hero arsonist" will bike in and burn down all these new places so the tent cities can thrive.

Re: “Why Are So Many Rays Dying In Lake Merritt, And Sharks At The Berkeley Aquatic Park?

Ernest Montague has no idea what he is speaking of in regards to the chronic mass epizootic die off of sharks, rays, skates and fish in San Francisco Bay area (San Mateo, Alameda, Berkeley and Oakland in particular).

Tide gates and storm water run off (not 'fresh water') are the vectors for this chronic problem and conflict of interests in conservation, research and public awareness.

Re: “Friday’s Briefing: OUSD Overspent by Millions on Admin and Consultants; Half of Bay Area Renters Are ‘Economically Burdened’

Screwed doesnt begin to describe it. Squeezed between a ravenous charter machine that just wants to cannibalize the district and turn it into a NOLA of the West, and a comically wasteful and aimless leadership group. Look at similar sized districts in CA and other large metro areas. Usually management layer is only 2 levels deep before you get to real work done. Here in Oakland you will see a top layer and a host of acolytes getting easy six figure salaries doing nothing but passing the buck to the grunts at the bottom. Then you have silos in each dept that just look to 'survive' the 2 year superintendent cycle. Nothing really gets done and money gets wasted in ethereal projects and relocations that overall have little impact on the teachers and students. Contractor management and ethics are a joke, with little oversight on funds being spent on dubious projects. Antwan Wilson exemplified this... He came to fertile soil for him and his cronies. But we blame the guy that left and not ourselves for exposing ourselves to such risk... Really the elected officials have been incompetent at best, negligent for sure and some of them may be compromised by political donors. The level of negligence at the union level is also worth noting. No one holds the ultimate fault in this situation, but in order to survive OUSD is going to need a new political pact with the whole city that focuses on long term (50-100 year plan) survivability and a more robust ethical bent on the district bylaws. For too long the board has been utilized as a political springboard and I think in the current political climate the system is ripe for hijacking and misuse. There is great talent in OUSD, and great impetus for serving all students, and bridging gaps for the underserved, it just hurts to see all that good energy negated and thrown away by longstanding inneficiencies and political stagnation.

Re: “The Laney College Opposition

The article doesn't get into A's owner John Fisher of Gap, Inc, who has ties to the charter school movement like Betsy DeVos and the Walton Family (Walmart), and his interest to privatize colleges. He is also interested in developing the area in order to increase rents and drive out low income communities of color. He is also anti-union and anti-environmental so he really could care less about the stadium creating so much pollution (light, sound, smog, trash) that will most likely drive protected birds and wildlife away or kill them. Selling Laney College and its surrounding property off to build a stadium would be the death knell of Oakland's Laney College as a public school, Lake Merritt, and neighbors who include Chinatown and other ethnic communities. If you follow the money behind the A's scam you will realize that stadium will be Oakland's biggest black eye if it comes to fruition.
