Re: “Acupuncture for Detox

This program is the prison industrial complex incarnated. They profit and get awarded BIG government contracts essentially profiting of the pain, trauma, and vulnerability of both recently released parolees as well as homeless folks and people highly dependent on housing/social services.

People celebrate the carwash, a little inside info on it from a former participant they are mandatory for compliance in the program and the workers are not paid for their labor). To me free labor that others profit off of is not truly recovery, but maybe I just have a different definition then them. Just some helpful info for all of those under the false belief that they are truly making these participants lives better by supporting it.

Also, the housing is terrible and overpriced even by Bay Area standards (they stack four bunkbeds in about a150ft. sq. room for close to $800/month). Being in such close quarters doesn't allow for the space or silence that I have seen help myself and countless others dealing with substance abuse/mental health disorders.

If possible, it usually isn't a choice for participants, AVOID THIS PROGRAM AT ALL COSTS!

Re: “Parachuting Into Coding

The best programmers are largely self taught, aside from theory, and formalized standards, it remains, like most scientific pursuits, the domain of self-driven/actualized people.

It is possible to become a world class Web 3.0 developer without spending ANY money on training, one only needs a computer, internet access, and a slightly above average IQ to be successful.
Seriously: Udacity, Edx, MIT Opencourse, and Codecademy all offer world class training for free.
I actually found the Udacity/SJSU partnership to be excellent, especially when compared to online offerings from other State Universities and Junior Colleges, however, the free offerings from Udacity are more well developed/comprehensive.
Being taught Computer Science by a Psychologist is well, ridiculous, as they have a limited appreciation for objective reality.
Also, like most of the traditional internet, most standards based, open languages have a ridiculous amount of tutorials, training, etc.

As an IT professional who has done worked with quite a few software developers, I can tell you that large parts of their days are composed of looking up documentation and learning new things.
It is a thinking mans game, and not a "skilled trade" rather, a lifestyle subscription, similar to Monkhood, or the Philosophers of antiquity.

It seems that what these "training programs" are really about is creating factory coders: people who can plugin to whatever cloned, vc-backed startup requires.

Seriously, how many idiot proof rehashes of basic services do we really need?
Instagrey-picture anyone?
What is really needed is a class in how to solve real world problems, unfortunately, this remains out of reach as the VC money has basically ruined innovation in the valley.

Re: “Parachuting Into Coding

I personally find it inspiring to witness the profound advances that individuals can experience with an intense learning environment. It's not for everyone, because it can be extremely difficult, but online programs like Bloc or in-person bootcamps like Dev Bootcamp and Hack Reactor are clearly getting something right.

Re: “Parachuting Into Coding

I have seen first-hand how well these bootcamp/apprenticeship style course can fill a huge gap in the market. I'd add tothis list, which is an online-only version of this apprenticeship model founded by two very smart founders in SF.

Re: “The Local Arts Conservatory

The excitement of a vibrant, full-blown arts community is certainly in evidence as you take your first steps down an OSA hallway. And we're acutely aware of the heartbreak of arts programs disappearing from other public schools, particularly schools full of under-resourced student populations. Our WriterCoach Connection program serves four Oakland high schools with a trained community-volunteer writer coach for every student in a grade level -- every 10th grader at Media Academy, Mandela High School, and Architecture Academy on the Fremont Federation of Schools campus in the Fruitvale, and, for the first time this year I'm delighted to say, Oakland School for the Arts. One-on-one attention from writer coaches, all year long, has generated remarkable increases in writing achievement at the Fremont Federation schools, and we look forward to more of same as we work with every 9th grader starting this spring at OSA, where the administration and parent community have worked hard to raise funding for the program to make sure that the school's high academic standards remain on a par with those in the arts.

Even in the face of the loss of arts funding, we can work to set high academic standards and generate increased academic achievement at all public schools with dedicated and consistent involvement from members of our communities. And when you take a closer look, you might be surprised at the sophistication of the curriculum at schools like Media, Mandela, and Architecture. We shouldn't be surprised at the supreme dedication and skill of so many of the teachers and administrators in these schools, and at what we can help them achieve for all students with focused community support.

We are training community volunteers as writer coaches right now for all four of these Oakland schools. You don't need to be a writer, editor, or teacher to do this. The training is free, and after two three-hour training sessions, you can be sitting next to a student at OSA, Media, Mandela, or Architecture, guiding him or her to more effective writing and critical thinking skills. It's something tangible you can do to raise achievement on the academic side, to help offset the disappearance of arts programs that has put so much pressure on admission to OSA, where the competition to get in the door has become understandably intense. For more information or to register for writer-coach training, go to Our coaches call it the volunteer opportunity of a lifetime.
