Lend You a HandKill Rock Stars

Rolling Stone‘s been busy running cover stories claiming Radiohead slew rock. Well, you can call off the ambulance, ’cause rock ‘n’ roll ain’t going down that easily. Anyone entertaining the idea that the music world’s gone soft can rest assured that the punk army is still armed and active in bands like Zen Guerrilla, Murder City Devils, and the Tight Bro’s from Way Back When. The new Tight Bro’s album, Lend You a Hand, shakes it like a pre-12-stepped Steven Tyler, rocks it like AC/DC on a triple speedball, and works it like a punk preacher screeching the gospel of rock ‘n’ roll. Frontman Jared seems sprung from a backseat conception between Janis Joplin and Bon Scott, with a rebel yell that could crack stadium glass with the best of ’em. He’s backed by an evangelical congregation of hard Southern rock that gets down on originals like “Make It a Habit,” “Might & Maybe,” and on covers like Joe Tex’s classic “Show Me.” Lend You a Hand is the kind of streetfightin’, brass-knuckled knockout that bands like the Black Crowes would sell their souls for the chance to sing backup on (but songs like “My Bad Love” and “Gimme the Key” were built with too strong of a metal streak for any band still wearing bellbottoms). Rolling Stone can have its pinched batch of art wankers. For the rock act with real murderous ability, the Tight Bro’s squeeze punk like a sweat rag till the juice runs down your leg.
