An art-rock band that actually makes the grade, Minneapolis foursome Tapes ‘n Tapes released The Loon last year on obscure music label Ibid. Then they signed with badasses XL (the label of Thom Yorke’s Eraser), which can now spread The Loon to all us squares. The xylophone-dappled carousel ride that opens “In Houston” peels back to reveal whining, writhing carnival synths and bass drum whoomps. The loungey, shaggy strum of “10 Gallon Ascots” corkscrews into a whinnying torrent of guitar that damn near pops your eardrums.
