Outdoor fun for the surplus population

SAT 12/3

Even Marley’s Ghost could have a fun, energetic Saturday morning at this year’s Bah Humbug 5K Run/Walk in San Ramon. Of course, dragging those chains over the 3.1-mile, certified, flat, paved route might become tiresome for the old spook, but with Ebenezer Scrooge and Bob Cratchit in the group (there are age divisions all the way to 85-plus) he’d have some company. And the course is so gentle even poor Tiny Tim might be able to manage it. Start time for the race is 9 a.m. at Bishop Ranch II, at the corner of Camino Ramon and Bollinger Canyon Road. Medals will be handed out to the first three finishers in each of numerous age divisions, with a special gift to contestants “dressed for the holidays” plus a costume award for those going all-out — such as Marley’s Ghost, for example. Race fee is $25 individual. Check-in opens at 8 a.m. — Kelly Vance

Run Home

Dock of the Bay

Here’s a great way to take in a beautiful bay vista while getting in an outdoor workout: Go online to Active.com and register (by Friday, please) for Saturday’s run along the Alameda bayfront, from the Harbor Bay Ferry Terminal to Bay Farm Island Bridge — it’ll cost ya $15. Show up at 9 a.m. on race day, and bring good weather with you. Oh yeah, one more thing: Reflect on your good luck in having a home to return to after the race, seeing as how it’s the Midway Homeless Shelter that this event is benefiting. Get healthy and help others get in out of the cold. First hundred registrants get a T-shirt. — Kelly Vance

WED 11/30

Weekday on the Mountain

If you’re one of the first people to read this, you probably still have time to jump in your Range Rover, drive out to Mount Diablo State Park in Danville, and take part in the Rock City hike. Sponsored jointly by the Sierra Club and Save Mount Diablo, the leisurely walk promises a good aerobic workout on sometimes-rocky terrain, and of course, world-class views of the surrounding countryside from the slopes of Diablo. The hike, led by Carol Larson (call 925-691-6303 to reserve), meets at 10 a.m. at the Uplands Picnic Area at the Rock City portion of the park, on Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard. Rain cancels. — Kelly Vance
