Monty's Flying Circus

Wed 11/3

In ex-coach Eric Musselman’s two seasons in the East Bay, the Golden State Warriors miraculously hinted at breaking out of their decade-long NBA malaise. They dominated at home, developed exciting young players, and generally gave their fans something to cheer about besides mascot Thunder’s windmill jams. So how did the team reward Musselman? They shipped him out of town on a Bay Point-bound BART train. But before you pound your forehead and scream “Damn you confounded Warriors!” — the selection of former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery as new court general can’t be viewed as anything but an upgrade. Unlike the prickly Musselman, who never jived with players, Montgomery has the solid backing of team brass and a history of national success that can’t be easily dismissed. Whether Monty will have enough juice to lead the team to the playoffs for the first time since the early 1990s, however, is certainly up for debate. The good news is that the W’s added by subtracting doe-eyed crybaby Nick Van Exel and by bringing in solid — if long in the tooth — pros Derek Fisher and Dale Davis to complement a roster highlighted by the likes of youngsters Jason Richardson, Speedy Claxton, Troy Murphy, and Mike Dunleavy. The problem is, the W’s failed to add a marquee player. And until they do that, the Warriors will be, well, the Warriors.

The Warriors open their home season tonight, November 3, against Portland, then Utah November 5 and the LA Clippers November 6. Warriors.com — A.J. Hayes
