.Most Successful Business Idea by a New Mom

The Snugglewrap

Sirena Masket couldn’t stop her newborn daughter from crying. For the first seven months, the only way to meet her baby’s needs was to hold her tight. Unfortunately, that left her with only one hand to do everything else a new mother has to do. The trained occupational therapist needed her hands back, and there was nothing on the market that fit her requirements. “Most of the common baby carriers were either uncomfortable for me or my daughter or for both of us,” says the 34-year-old. Necessity, as always, is the mother of invention. Masket took her love of sewing and created the Snugglewrap, a comfortable baby wrap that combines a snug fit for the baby with the freedom to move for the wearer. “I started making them for all of my friends. People would stop them on the street, at the doctor’s office, on a hike, and ask where they got that cool-looking baby carrier. I started getting phone calls from all over the country, and before I knew it, I started a business.” Three years and another child later, Masket’s business is thriving. Priced at a ridiculously affordable $38, she sells between 25 to 30 slings a week. Her only advertising is a compact, easy-to-navigate web site. “I’ve always been a believer in the benefits of baby wearing as a tool for promoting bonds and closeness,” she says while carrying her six-month-old son, Reggie, in her teal Snugglewrap. “Parents have gotten away from this time-honored technique, and I’m trying my best to bring it back.”
