.Most Inspirational Place to Work Out

Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA

This clean, well-lighted space has the usual mixture of free weights, strength machines, a pool, sauna, hot tub, racquetball courts, yoga rooms, classes, child watch, and cardiovascular machines with individual TVs. But the one difference here is the wide range of exercisers. Young buff-cut grunting studs in the free-weight area check the mirror like ballerinas. Young women work the treadmills and ellipticals with ponytails flipping rhythmically. Young-to-middle-aged men and women in many stages of fitness move from station to station uninhibited by the meat-market vibe of some gyms. Exercisers with canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and even wheeled oxygen tanks work out with the assistance of a caring staff. The fitness staff (not “personal trainers”) is another key difference. They are available for advice either ad hoc or by appointment, and don’t seem to be working on commission. New members receive an evaluation and a computerized workout program. The rates start at $40 a month, and no one is refused membership due to proven financial need.
