Albany Bowl

Blacklights, bowling, and Tone Loc: the Albany Bowl on Friday and Saturday nights is a campy throwback to junior high. If bowling itself doesn’t remind you of your youth, the giant video screen playing music videos from the ’80s and early ’90s should do the trick. Toni Basil’s “Mickey,” Young MC’s “Bust a Move,” and a Skid Row ballad were among the choicer picks one recent night. The place can get packed on weekend evenings, which may mean waiting for a lane. Luckily, there’s a refreshingly unpretentious bar, dartboards, and pool tables. On weekdays, the Albany Bowl offers some dirt-cheap bowling specials, such as $1 games from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and $2 games for Cal students on Sunday nights. Fridays and Saturdays are more expensive at $4.75 per person per game, but the atmosphere is lively and it’s a fun alternative to yet another night at the movies or the bar.
