Spice Monkey Cafe & Restaurant

Sure, the East Bay has vegan and vegetarian restaurants and a
gluten-free bakery that caters specifically to those disciplines. But
Spice Monkey owner Kanitha Matoury has another kind of model going on
at her niche-free restaurant — one that handles mainstream market
demands as deftly as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free needs. She
takes special dietary concerns to new heights by offering lots of
meat-, dairy-, egg-, honey-, and gluten-free options alongside all the
other items on her regular menu. At last count on the often-updated
menu, there were twelve vegan dishes (Poppin’ Popcorn or warm beets and
olives, for instance), twenty vegetarian selections (Say Cheese Pizza
and the Mediterranean wrap among them), and twenty gluten-free items
(slow pork and Sweetness Steak, to name two). When Spice Monkey debuted
with homemade dishes using ingredients locally, organically, and
naturally sourced whenever possible, people loved it. And now there is
more to love because Matoury has taken the guesswork out of eating out
for vegetarians, vegans, and celiacs. Easy-to-read icons instantly
designate the relevant dishes, so such diners don’t have to quiz the
waitstaff repeatedly about Spice Monkey’s appetizers, salads,
“hand-wiches,” pizzas, potpies, daily delights, specialties, soups, or
desserts.
