.Least Uptight Softball League

Alameda Adult Slo-Pitch League

Are you looking for a rec league where the other team and its fans won’t laugh out loud at you for booting a grounder, losing a fly ball in the lights, or flailing at what would have been ball four? Two words: Avoid Oakland. Or are you looking for a league where a home run is a home run and not an automatic disqualification? Two more words: Avoid Berkeley. There, when you hit a ball over the Grove Field fence in left, it’s not only an out, but you’re kicked out of the game; if your team is short of players, it will have to forfeit. That rule was instituted after angry neighbors complained about home runs denting their cars. There’s one local league where you can avoid such derision and crazy rules — Alameda. Playing softball in the island city is an almost-pastoral experience, with friendly games and friendly fans and fields so well kept that grounders bounce true and you don’t twist your ankle when you’re shagging a foul ball.
