Michael Lerner

Michael Lerner is rabbi of Beyt Tikkun Synagogue in San Francisco, author of Spirit Matters: Global Healing and the Wisdom of the Soul, editor of Tikkun magazine (www.tikkun.org), and a Berkeley resident. He was recently arrested at the US State Department along with ex-Harvard professor Cornel West in a nonviolent protest against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

Seventh Heaven Body Awareness Center – Michael Ziegler creates a center of spiritual refreshment in the middle of Berkeley. (2820 7th St., Berkeley. 510-665-4300)

Ginger Island – The best of California cuisine and good vibes on 4th Street near Hearst. (1820 4th St., Berkeley. 510-644-0444)

Cesar Chavez Park – A magnificent place to reconnect to God while experiencing an unbelievably beautiful view of the Bay. (University Avenue at the Bay, Berkeley.)

The Juice Bar Collective – Great lunch, and still the place for ex-radicals and aging hippies to mix with the new young ones. (2114 Vine St., Berkeley. 510-548-8473)

Cody’s Books – I love the Jewish book selections — certainly the best and smartest collection in the area — and the magazine selections. Still the preeminent book store in the United States, although I also love Black Oak and its array of evening readings. (2454 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley. 510-845-7852)

East Bay Tikkun Community – The voice of both Jews and non-Jews who know that Middle East peace and security for Israel will never be achieved without justice and security for the Palestinian people. Plus a powerful force for “a new bottom line” in American politics.
