D'wayne Wiggins

Before guitarist, singer, and producer Wiggins opened Jahva House on Oakland’s Lakeshore Avenue, he was most famous as a member of R&B group Tony! Toni! TonĂ©!

Club Ibiza – One club spot I recommend for all people visiting the town if they want something that’s kind of cool, over-the-edge, exciting, and adventurous is Club Ibiza. It’s like Studio 54-slash-the Garage. It has a pool, people can rent rooms for a large party, and the hotel’s connected. I really recommend it for that late Saturday night high-energy crowd. (10 Hegenberger Rd., Oakland. 510-383-9888)

Phat Beatz record store – He has it all. A lot of music you get there before it reaches the mainstream. (6101 San Pablo Ave., Oakland. 510-655-9889)

KPFA – It’s real information, not watered down with people pimping advertising and trying to control the listeners and show their products. It’s about what’s really jumping off in the town and in the world. (94.1 FM. 510-848-6767)

Oasis Restaurant & Bar – It’s a real cool setting. I especially love their fish. They have an outside patio and you can hear Caribbean music, African music, and hip-hop. (135 12th St., Oakland. 510-763-0404)

Kimball’s Carnival – They’ve been having a cool salsa night with a live band and frequently they have people from the Escovedo family come through. It’s a hot spot if you enjoy salsa. (522 2nd St., Oakland. 510-444-6979)

Marcus Book Stores – It focuses on African Americans. There’s a lot of culture in there; there’s a lot to know about and catch up on. (3900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland. 510-652-2344)

Lois the Pie Queen – Aww …. the salmon croquettes, no doubt! (851 60th St., Emeryville. 510-658-5616)
