.Best Women’s ClothingHow to dress to the point of tears

Sottovoce

This store rivals any of the great women’s boutiques in Los Angeles or New York but with none of the attitude. There are no silly tulle miniskirts either; just real, stunning, wearable clothes such as the vintage-inspired Zelda line with its rayon crepe blazers, skirts, and pants that can take you from job interview to party, they’re so versatile. Owner Christine Mewha carries hand-loomed Margaret O’Leary cashmere sweaters and the hip new flirty Nougat line from London with its subtle beaded sweaters and skirts. Her clientele ranges from twentysomething hipsters to mothers of the bride looking for something to wear on the wedding day. Got a job interview? This is the place to go. Sottovoce carries satin Van Tisse blouses in pale rose with different ribbon linings that would most certainly make a fine impression on any prospective boss when paired with a black Zelda blazer. The store also is stocked with great-looking casual clothes such as cropped Sienna leather jackets in a quilted cream, pink, or olive green. The wares in Mewha’s glass jewelry case are hard to resist, especially the Jeanine Payer silver pendants and rings engraved with literary quotes from Yeats, Aristotle, Dickinson, and the like. A delicate silver necklace with a tiny dangling blue stone is inscribed with the perfect Camus quote: “Live to the point of tears.” The shop just off the bustling avenue also stocks locally crafted leather handbags that resemble small versions of weekend totes in cool colors such as pale turquoise, pistachio, and mustard.
