.Best Wine Shop

Solano Cellars

Now a mature thirty years old, this atmospheric wine shop is showing remarkable character with age and should mature gracefully for years. Founded back when Zinfandel and oddity Rhone-style wines were just hitting the radar, a recent change in ownership and a youthful management team has maintained Solano Cellars’ initial dedication to purveying rarity wines and family labels. Beams, barrels, boards and benches provide a lodgy feel as walls of dusty bottles lead browsers on a tour by grape variety and wine region, including a few internationals. On the shelves are 300 labels, plus sake, cider and your essential Belgian beers. Pair them at the tasting bar to salads, cheeses, chocolates and charcuteries, or get straight to business, if you think you’re so smart, and test your geo-sensory skills with a blind-tasting, bottle-in-a-bag, guess-the-region wine flight. Don’t feel dumb; not one person in ten gets it right – but it’s free chocolate if you do.
