Union Point Park

Union Point Park, opened in 2005, is easy to miss. It sits on the
Oakland side of the Oakland Estuary, close to Coast Guard Island, off
of 22nd Avenue. Despite its hidden location — or perhaps because
of it — the park’s got a lot going on. It’s a great place for
kids to play and run, for a romantic walk, or for some lone meditation.
The facilities and structures are new and clean, there’s lots of
parking, plenty of grassy open space for sports, and enough picnic
tables for birthday parties and barbeques. It has a crazy-looking
conglomerate statue, “Sigame/Follow Me,” honoring twenty Oakland women
by Scott Donahue. Kids seem to love the thirteen-foot statue, and
there’s a big play structure that fits in with the park’s overall
nautical theme. Nary a hint that this use to be an industrial
brownfield, thanks in large part to PGAdesign and Grupo de Diseno
Urbano, who worked collaboratively to transform this area. There is an
odd yet wonderful circular structure where you can walk up to the top
and see a view of the estuary. The park is part of the larger Bay
Trail.
