The Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival in Oakland’s San Antonio Park epitomizes what’s good about Oakland. The festival is organized by the EastSide Arts Alliance, a group of artists, cultural workers, and community organizers of color based in the lower San Antonio district. The live jazz festival is a tribute to the late revolutionary leader Malcolm X. New festival-goers will find a surprising number of guests at this local festival — mostly people of color, activists, and artists of all ages, from young babes in arms to elders with canes. A main jazz stage features great local performers as well as New Orleans jazz masters, and singers like local R&B songstress Goapele. A youth stage features many local hip-hop acts. Local vendors sell screen-printed T-shirts, jewelry, and food, as folks lounge away in the sun, enjoying good music, good food, and good company.
