Bargain Bills and Bettys will find so much treasure at Clausen House that they’ll need a suitcase to lug all the goodies home. Take a deep breath before entering: The place is literally packed with new and used electronics, clothing, furniture, and household goods (a set of delicate sherry glasses, a well-fitting denim jacket, a comfy floral overstuffed armchair), all at very affordable prices. It’s part of Clausen House Community Services, an organization that since 1967 has been helping developmentally disabled adults in Oakland live independently, and the shop gives some of the 180 people it serves a chance to explore supported employment. Clausen House will pick up your donations, or you can drop them off yourself. Next time you need a little retail therapy, try it out. With such a worthy cause, you’re unlikely to experience buyer’s remorse.
