.Best Teen Movie

Everyday Eastlake

As the kids would say, this movie is hella cool. For one, it features real young people instead of the typical lily-white twentysomething Hollywood “teens.” And, better yet, teenagers researched, wrote, edited, directed, and acted in it. The forty-minute film is about a few days in Oakland’s multiethnic Eastlake neighborhood. It interweaves several story lines, including the adventures of a woman who recycles cans, a record store owner who never seems to get any business, a pair of young thugs-in-the-making, two girls looking for a ride to a rave, and a dad who is obsessed with a “computy” he found on the street. Pepe Urquijo helped the kids put the film together as a part of the East Bay Asian Youth Center’s video and film production internship program, Streetside Productions. The film premiered at Parkway Theater in October and played at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival in March. If you missed this very funny film, don’t worry: copies are available for $10 at the Asian Youth Center.
