According to an article in the Oakland Tribune, Alameda has more
stained glass per capita than any other city in the United States. One
local aficionado has photos of stained glass from more than 1,500
restored Victorians on the island. Alameda’s Twin Towers Methodist
Church gets a solid honorable mention for its classic stained glass,
but is edged out by First Presbyterian Church, which has so many
old-school windows that they “may distract a viewer from other fine
architectural details,” according to the city’s Historical Advisory
Board. They were recently restored to their eye-rattling brilliance,
and ten out of fourteen panels depict the life of Jesus from his early
ministry through his death and beyond. Check them out some sunny Sunday
morning.
