MOCHA is an art haven for kids and harried parents. Families can come
on a drop-in basis at $7 a pop and stay all day, or join as members and
get free drop-in all year. There’s always something to spark the inner
artist, whether it’s a big blob of homemade play dough or blank
canvases (okay, just sheets of paper) on the painting wall. Plus, there
are rotating arts and crafts, like hatmaking or printmaking using salad
spinners. The best part? Parents don’t have to worry about setup
— or cleanup. For the wary kids, there are bins of toys to keep
them busy or a playhouse with play food, until they decide to pick up
that paintbrush. The center recently celebrated its twenty-year
birthday with a big outdoor bash. The staff is nice and its location is
also convenient, close to the 12th Street/Downtown Oakland BART
station.
