.Best Salads: The munificence of a twofer

Cafe Intermezzo

They line up out the door of Cafe Intermezzo every noon for their hour with a salad at this longtime campus favorite. We’ve seen big men sag under the weight of Intermezzo’s bowls, heaped high with — count ’em — a dozen ingredients: lettuce, red cabbage, carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, eggs, kidney beans, avocado, croutons, sprouts, hard-boiled egg, and, for an extra buck and change, cold cuts. There’s so much fiber in every bowl that we always ask for extra slices of honey-wheat bread to slow the speed of those nutrients, ahem, coursing through our systems (okay, we just like the bread). Students, take note: Even given the low-low prices and your high-high metabolism rate, you and a friend can split a sandwich-salad combo and both walk out stuffed.
