Dave Gleason

Over the past couple of years, Dave Gleason & the New Originals have emerged as one of the East Bay’s busiest club bands, packing such joints as the Ivy Room, the Starry Plough, and Hotel Utah, and playing intermission music in the Fillmore’s Poster Room during Willie Nelson and Wilco shows. Gleason sings in a tear-soaked tenor and improvises consistently inventive guitar solos that draw on such influences as Roy Nichols, Don Rich, and Clarence White. He’s been tagged alt.country, though he was brought up on the hard-core honky-tonk platters in his guitar-picking dad’s collection. Part of the quartet’s popularity stems from the fact that its bassist and drummer — Michael Therieau and John Kent — were members of the aforementioned much-beloved, now-defunct Loved Ones. A forthcoming debut CD features a fine bunch of originals by Gleason and Therieau — most in the honky-tonk tradition, although one rocks out like classic Rolling Stones — plus a great tune by the late Gram Parsons previously unheard by most Parsons buffs.
