.Best Rising Star, Female

Mystic

Oakland’s Mystic was nominated for a Grammy for Best Collaboration this year — not bad for someone most people have never heard of. She’s has been involved in the music scene for years, but she just recently broke through with her 2001 album Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom. It combines soul with rap, tied together neatly with a socially and emotionally conscious bow. But let’s face it, Tracy Chapman does political well too, but we won’t see her on MTV’s TRL anytime soon. Mystic is more bankable: She’s fine as hell, and she’s dripping with talent. With a combo like that, she could very well be the next big thing out of Oakland.
