Zydeco Music and Dance

For up-tempo music lovers with a passion for parnter dancing on a smooth-as-corn-silk hardwood floor, no-frills Alameda Eagles Hall on Friday nights is the nexus of zydeco-crazed Bay Area fans, most of whom have been making the pilgrimage to the Island Nation regularly for this traditional-style dance hall hoedown since 1995 (although the venue changed a couple of times this year). It’s organized by Louisiana Sue, who dubs it “the hottest zydeco dance scene outside of Louisiana” and brings in big names from Cajun country while spreading the love for all things Creole. The result is wholesome, sweaty, rock-’em, sock-’em, foot-stomping fun to uplifting tunes that will spur the quietest of wallflowers — even ones with two left feet — to accept an invitation for a whirl around the dance floor. It’s friendly, lively, and like no other East Bay music hall, because this major mob scene also attracts a base of folks as diverse as the ingredients in good gumbo. Dana Desimone kicks off the night with dance lessons at 8 p.m., but the boot-scooting, two-stepping, shuffling, and waltzing starts for real at 9 p.m. when the accordion and washboard strike a chord.
