.Best Retro Hot Dog

The Pampered Pup

The Pampered Pup is a perfect little eatery for penny-pinching weenie fans who appreciate a hot dog or Polish sausage on the run. Merely the name and the cute retro sign (of a happily lounging hound dog admiring a meaty frank on his fork) are enough to warrant exploration of this tiny yellow-and-orange-tiled shop. Alameda teens love this place where meals can be had for under $5, and at peak times the stools and Formica tabletops are crowded with jabbering kids peeling back paper wrappers to reveal the meat-and-bun wonders within. While the cooks will do dogs your way, they also offer pre-designed combos, such as the El Paso (a chili cheese dog) or the San Antonio (one dressed with bacon bits and cheese). Wash it all down with a soda, tapioca drink, or smoothie to bring back memories of those salad days of youth. Well, okay, hold the salad.
