Rivoli Restaurant

Expecting a summer visit from Grams and Gramps? Forget Macaroni Grill
— they can do that back in Missouri. Show them something really
special, a Berkeley gourmet landmark. We’re talking Rivoli, chef Wendy
Brucker’s delicious yet low-key digs on Solano Avenue. You’ll be seated
in a sedate, carpeted dining room where the preponderance of gray heads
will put Grams immediately at ease. And yet the back wall of windows
looks out onto a garden where you might catch raccoons, cats, or even
skunks dining at a kibble bowl. Little do they know what they’re
missing on the other side of the glass: The Rivoli diner can’t make a
misstep with the menu; a must for first-timers, though, is the
restaurant’s signature appetizer, the Portobello mushroom fritter,
served with aioli, capers, and shaved parmesan. Even vegetarians will
find that the single meatless entrée choice, whatever it may be,
will be something to write home about. The service is uneven,
especially if your party is small; you may be left waiting quite a
while for dessert or the check. But who cares? It’s warm, quiet, and
cozy here.
