Reefkeeping may be the hot new thing among aquarists, but Lucky Goldfish has been at it for more than two decades. Don’t let the name fool you; there is much more to this place than the homely goldfish: live corals, exotic reef fish like mandarins and tangs, and real ocean water ($1/gallon). Lucky Goldfish frequently offers tank-raised fish and pieces of coral fragmented from the store’s own stock (“frags” to the initiated), allowing customers to populate their reef tanks without depleting a real reef in a Third World country. The store’s display tank is a mini-scuba dive, with neon fish darting among staghorn-shaped corals. The knowledgeable staff keeps the display pristinely scrubbed of algae so the reef fantasy is untarnished. A rare, twenty-year-old elegance coral has pride of place in the tank; one-inch frags from the elegance cost $150, and require placement on a waiting list. Freshwater fish and general pet supplies are on sale too, but the reef section is the store’s real boast.
