Stacks of ginger cookies chock full of crystallized ginger beckon through the front window. Big brownies cut into perfect squares are piled up near the scones, not far from a cooler stocked with tasty goodies such as vanilla shortcakes. And staring straight ahead in line, it’s nearly impossible not to stare at the cooks as they whip up this Telegraph Avenue bakery’s now-legendary fried chicken sandwiches. All of this is why there seems to be a perpetual line at the popular spot, and why even on a recent weekday afternoon customers were out the door waiting to order and the outside picnic tables (an array of colorful old ironing boards) were all occupied. The good news is that Betty runs a pretty tight ship, and the line moves pretty quickly most days. And at least there’s so much good and reasonably priced food to drool at on the way to order that there’s rarely a dull moment in the line. Also check out Bakesale Betty’s stand at the Temescal Farmers’ Market on Sundays.
