.Best Punk Rock Dive Bar with Cheap-Ass Food

Eli's Mile High Club

When historic blues bar Eli’s Mile High Club shut its doors last year,
Jason Herbers and Geoff Melville seized the opportunity to reopen the
club with a rock ‘n’ roll twist: They stuffed the jukebox with punk,
metal, and blues and opened a kitchen to serve up food. Eli’s was once
again a hangout for beer lovers and nightcrawlers with a penchant for
imbibing liquor to loud tunes. “Much of the East Bay punk and metal
scene has made it their own,” said co-owner Herbers. “We took it over
with the vision of having a place with a wide variety of music, good
food, and cheap drinks.” Although the Department of Alcoholic Beverage
Control currently restricts the bar’s weekday hours to 11 p.m. (1 a.m.
on weekends), the bar compensates for an early last call with a daily
happy hour ($1 beers, $3 well drinks), ever-changing drink specials
(mini margarita shots, sweet tea cocktails), a huge backyard patio, and
great, greasy bar food (try a quadruple-stack cheeseburger or a shrimp
po’ boy). On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the bar plays 1970s and 1980s
punk tunes, Tuesdays and Sundays are soul/reggae-themed, and on most
nights a projector shines random horror movies and skate videos on the
wall. Come for good drinks, stay for good times.
