It’s hard not to fall at lease slightly in love with Chilean judge Juan Guzman, the heart and soul of The Judge and the General, the latest documentary by Berkeley-based producer/director Elizabeth Farnsworth along with producer/director Patricio Lanfranco. That’s because the duo and their talented team went far beyond rehashing the human rights abuses of ex-dictator General Pinochet’s coup and regime. Instead, they let the story unfold through the transformation of the soft-spoken, meticulous Judge Guzman — who began his career as a Pinochet supporter, but after being assigned to investigate started to suspect the atrocities committed under the General were worse than anyone knew. Farnsworth and her crew achieved incredible access to film the Judge in action throughout the investigation, whether he was exhuming an alleged car crash victim’s body to study the cause of death or climbing down a mineshaft in search of clues. The world needs more heroes, and now we’ve got a few: the Judge, Farnsworth, Lanfranco, and their crew.
