.Best Plant Nursery: The perfect place to go native

Ploughshares Nursery

On a patch of compost and mulch overlooking Rosenblum Winery and the Port of Oakland sits a one-of-a-kind nursery specializing in native plants, education, job training, and permaculture (a whole-system approach using natural cycles and landscape to propagate crops). Ploughshares was started in partnership with the Alameda Point Collaborative to offer training to its clients. As a result of this program and ongoing volunteer efforts, the nursery now has a large number of native plants — ornamental, medicinal, and culinary — to offer the public. Staff and volunteers are working on cultivating more of the area into demonstration gardens. Nursery manager Michael Anderson knows a lot about native and climate-appropriate plants, and is at the nursery during open hours (Wednesdays through Sundays, 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) to offer advice.
