.Best Place Where the Wild Things Are

Ohlone Regional Wilderness Area

There’s not a lot of wildness left in the East Bay. The closest thing
around is the Ohlone Regional Wilderness. In the gap between Livermore,
Fremont, and Pleasanton, the Ohlone is a little-known local alternative
to driving to the Sierra. Spring is the best time for camping spaces,
decent weather, solitude, greenery, dazzling wildflowers, and running
streams, which are the only source for replenishing drinking water. The
28-mile Ohlone Wilderness Trail is a strenuous, road-free hike up Rose
Peak, an impressive mountain measuring just 32 feet lower than Mount
Diablo. Along the way you might see animals rarely found in the East
Bay: rattlesnakes, mountain lions, tule elk, deer, bobcats, golden
eagles, and … cows? Quite a few of them, actually, in the lower
elevations exercising grazing rights and exuding a hint of menace.
