.Best Place to Skateboard

Cityview Skatepark

Choosing the best place to skate in the East Bay is a difficult trick to land. To a skater’s eye, the world is one big skate spot. To politicians and mothers, the best spots are controlled environments, preferably far from downtown businesses and, if possible, behind a chain-link fence. Where do the two points of view merge? At the Cityview Skatepark on the decommissioned Alameda Naval Air Station. The park’s challenging design gets high props from skaters, and local politicos boast the accomplishment as a victory for youth services (it’s just a coincidence that the region’s skaters have been pushed to land’s edge). Outside the fence, however, skaters have also discovered that the old base harbors some mighty fine rails, stairs, and ledges. There’s even a gap-to-rail that keeps skaters from San Francisco salivating all the way across our Bridge. Careful, boys. Don’t skate over your tongues.
