.Best Place to Play Pool

Thallasa

Thallasa is the perfect place for pool sharks, nine-ball dilettantes, or eight-ball posers who use the game as a front for drinking. In Greece, Thallasa refers to all things maritime. In Berkeley, Thallasa refers to a cavernous, comfortable bar that sits adjacent to a well-lit room with rows of billiard tables. Thallasa’s decor lives up to its name; manager Jason Beebout describes the nautical kitsch as “Pee Wee’s Playhouse underwater.” The sea-themed paintings and sculptures, mermaid, fishing nets, and outrigger canoe that decorate the place will having you saying “Aye, Aye” to the well-stocked yet reasonably priced bar with fourteen beers on tap, a great $4 martini, and the “Subversive Chick” for those looking for potent frou-frou. If you’re here for the pool, you won’t be disappointed. Thallasa boasts 22 indoor tables and one outdoors that rent for $5 an hour daily until 9 p.m. and on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights. The price doubles after nine on the remaining nights. As Thallasa is part bar scene, part pool hall, weekends can be very crowded, but the atmosphere is fun and the pool is good.
