ThimbleCreek

ThimbleCreek is one of the state’s few remaining spots to learn the Old World skill of quilting. About a year and a half ago, it moved from its longtime home in an easily accessible Walnut Creek strip mall to an office park in Concord. Though the current location is significantly less desirable, the shop’s fabric selection continues to impress. Whether you’re in the market for Victorian-style designs, flannels, or reissues of mid-century modern prints, you’re sure to find them here. Teachers at ThimbleCreek include some of the country’s top quilting book authors, and classes range through all skill levels. Beginning levels start with how to cut fabric, including a key lesson on avoiding painful self-injury with a rotary cutter, and progress with instruction on to how to piece, baste, quilt, and bind. Service is friendly and especially open to younger and novice quilters, and the ladies who run the shop work math miracles with their calculators as they help customers figure out exactly how much fabric they need to construct the coverlet of their dreams.
