This might not be the hippest place to buy music. (That distinction would have to go to one of Berkeley’s smaller and more characterful music stores: Mod Lang, at 2136 University Avenue.) Amoeba is too obviously useful to be really au courant. But frankly it’s the bedrock upon which all other music shopping is built. The selection of secondhand CDs is truly prodigious, and secondhand equals cheap, which is always good. But more importantly, a lot of used CDs means that you can often find rare or out-of-print editions here for a fraction of the price you’d have to pay elsewhere. Amoeba has its weaknesses, certainly. But just up the street at 2401 Telegraph is Rasputin, a store that is strong in exactly those areas in which Amoeba is weak and serves as an excellent backup, like having a nice patron saint down the street in case God doesn’t answer your prayer.
