Mount Diablo Adult Education’s Pleasant Hill campus is like a hidden vein of ore along 680. Nestled in a residential neighborhood, the state- and federally-funded institution for lifelong learning offers a truly astounding array of classes for adult students of all ages. Even more astounding than the variety are the prices, which range from a mere $30 to $93 per quarter. In addition to the typical exercise and computer courses offered by adult education centers throughout the Bay Area, Mount Diablo Adult Education’s Pleasant Hill site teaches classes in more than fifteen areas of that good old-fashioned field of home economics. And we’re not just talking quilting and flower arranging, although those are some options. Thanks to significant government subsidies, students there can also affordably learn advanced furniture construction (one class teaches students to make Shaker-style bedside tables), wood turning, welding, sheet metal forming, and auto or RV upholstery. Think the Crucible, but without the hipster vibe. Many of the instructors at Mount Diablo Adult Education teach the same classes at quadruple the prices at other Bay Area venues.
