.Best place for Midnight Chess and Mid-Evening Doughnuts

Colonial Donuts

Under the glare of the sharp white neon lights at any hour of night,
Colonial Donuts on Lakeshore Avenue is a fine place for doughnuts. But
the very best time to be there is at 8:30 p.m. on the dot, which is
precisely when the fresh burning hot Buttermilk doughnuts come out of
the oven with the glaze dripping just right, so it can get into your
arteries extra fast. Jam it down with some of that special coffee or
just milk. Eat a dozen of so of those and the sugar buzz will keep you
up long enough to watch the chess marathons underway. The chess players
come in all ages, races, sizes, and types, but are mostly men. They use
timers and for them chess is not a quiet contemplative game. There are
exclamations of victory and dejected sighs of defeat and more than the
occasional curse and trash-talking of opponents. And, of course,
doughnuts.
