.Best Place for a New A’s Stadium: C’mon Jerry. Fer heaven’s sake!

Laney College Parcel

If Oakland wants to keep Zito & Co. in town, city officials are gonna have to do some scouting. Close to BART and I-880, requiring zero demolition and no toxic cleanup, this fifteen-acre site could bring rental income to Laney College and make it the only college to have a Major League Baseball stadium on campus. City management and the Oakland A’s owners need to tone down the rhetoric and get back to the business of baseball. The Athletics’ management has partly invalidated its own argument that the team needs a new, city-funded stadium to remain competitive. Any team that makes the playoffs four years in a row is competitive by definition. On the other hand, Oakland has blown some good chances by selling off previous promising sites — including an all-but-abandoned chunk of downtown — to developers. Apparently, Jerry Brown & Co. have overlooked the fact that new stadiums have helped revitalize rundown parts of downtown in Denver, Cleveland, Baltimore, San Francisco, and Phoenix. So jump on this one, Jerry.
